buying advice and general pointers please-evo 4/5

looking for my 1st evo soon and got some questions for ya'll if you could help me out please

1-really like the evo 4 but ive heard of crankwalk and it dont sound good,is there a mod you could do to stop this happening or how much to fix should it happen?

2-balancer belt.....what is this? seen some evos with this removed.....costly mod or not?

3-ayc....if it fails does it have to be repaired straight away or can you run it without it?

4-lash adjusters? is this a common problem with evos in general? ive seen nr autosport sell a set of 16 upgraded ones for £130ish but how much to fit?

5-any other common problems with these models gearbox/diff/transfer box/head gasket/bottom ends etc?

6-finally if i did buy an evo 4/5 it would only be a weekend car and it will not be thrashed to death but i would like around 350bhp-can the standard engine take this?

i know the importance of a turbo timer,uprated fuel pump etc
any specialists near hinckley leicester way i could take the car to for repairs,servicing and upgrades?

yes the 4 can get crank walk some do some don't! there is a few mod's that can be done. Best mod is aa newer engine or one with part's from a newer one.if the ayc break's you can run with out it. It will become an open diff. Engine and gear box will be fine at the power you want to run. hope this help's

Best advice is to not just buy the first one you see cos there are so many different quality of cars for sale and you don't want to buy a rough one.

Some really clean examples out there, some are just full of rust so beware !!

Also just look to see which service is almost due cos a 4.5k service will cost around £150 but a 45k service will cost £500-£600 so take this into account before agreeing a price

Yes you can still drive a car with the Ayc not working, it's just the diff will run open and not lock

Balance shaft belts can snap but they won't if changed the same time as the cambelt so just look on the receipts to see if it says it's been done and you should be fine. It's all part of a 45k service which you can always get done yourself for peace of mind.
Removal is an engine out job and is a complete engine strip and so only normally done as part of a engine build

+1 on what Lee has put.

Make sure you start the car up when going to view as some of the sellers are quite sly and start the car up so you don't notice they've removed the ayc bulb!! This is very common when there is a fault with the ayc. If it's the pump, not a cheap fix.

Lash adjusters get air in them and start making noiseIt costs approx. £300 fitted for a new set (bigger 3mm ones). You could even do them yourself with a helping hand and know a bit about mechanics.

You could easily get a 4 upto 350hp. For this you'll need a standard ecu from an evo 5/6/7, a decat, airfilter, walbro 255 fuel pump, boost controller, and a remap. It's safe enough to get them upto this. For a 5 you'll need everything apart from the ecu.

Yea the scumbag I bought my car off took the Ayc and abs bulbs out and guess what happened when I put them back in.... New abs sensor and a replacement Ayc pump later the lights now come on and go off as they should.

Simple mistake I looked to see if the lights were on while we were moving which they weren't so thought was fine but didn't check to see if they come on when the ignition was turned on.

Turn key and lights should come on then go off and stay off. Double check they stay off while driving cos quite often if there is a fault then they will only come back on when the car moves.

I know what you mean Lee, I nearly got caught out with it again last month. The guy did it and thought I wouldn't notice! I knew but thought I'll mention it later before doing a deal. I still bought the car. I should name and shame

He reckoned ayc was ok, just had fluids etc. changed!! If the ayc was ok, why is the bulb taken out!!

Yea bloke I bought mine off said before I got there said all was fine and fault tested. When I questioned him why the bulbs were missing he said he didn't know, said he paid someone £50 and they fixed it ?! What a load of b0llocks

good advice lads im learning something all the time here i did check the ayc light came on and off when buying my car but never i wouldnt have noticed if they didnt come on wen i turned the key.

The guy didn't even mention the ayc bulb, even though I had asked if everything was ok. Travelled a long way to turn back and my mate still wanted the car. I could've killed the guy :whistling: and it's a good job I didn't take one of my other mates along! lol

some people would chance their arm at anything!!

i once drove an hour to look at a car and asked before i left was there any marks/scratches on it he said no came to the carpark where we arranged to meet drove in looked at the car it was a mess scratches and dents everywhere i never even got out of the car i just turned around and drove home


another time i actually bought a car 4 hours away, driving home for an hour and it died altenator was gone i felt like choking the guy!!

so now i wont even bother looking at a car unless the seller is either willing to drive to meet or else go to their house to view!
