A tricky problem

Hi everyone here's one for you my evo 4 when driving normally the temp gauge goes just below half and stays there but if i come to a dual carridge way or fast stretch of road and i go faster as you do the temp gauge starts to drop down to below a quarter and will stay there till i drive slower or come to a junction, 2 question, 1 why does my evo do this and 2 when the temp drops low enough will this automatically put my choke on

Have you checked your thermostat? Sounds like its stuck open, does it take longer than usual to get up to temp to start with? If it sticks open the coolant is constantly flowing through the rad and is being over cooled by the extra air over the rad by higher speeds.

Thanks for the advice and it gets to working temp in about 5 mins, how do I check to see if the thermostat is stuck on and how can I fix it, thanks

It can be checked by removing it and seeing if it is open, if closed put it into a boiling kettle and see if it opens, or the easier route is to spend about £20 and get a new one to be sure.
