A bit of help on the evo 4

hi guys im after a evo 4 but i dont know a huge deal about them i tend to buy with my hart not my head, dum i know:hm:

I know a very little about the evo 4 like the cam belt change at 50k and they drink like a scotsman.
But what are they like when it comes to tunning and day to driving.
i heard that the evo4 engine is not as stong as the later engines so to push big power is unlikely.

is there any bits to look out for

im just selling my rx7 1st then ill be on the look out.

i like the evo 5-6-7-8-9-10 but they cost to much

when at 1st glance a evo 4 has all i want

if you cold help me on this it would be great

you will read and hear alot of people saying about the weaker 4 engine... it is the bottom end and has a little trouble with crank walk.... you can get an evo 5 for not alot more than a 4 and it is more reliable engine wise.

E4 suffers from weak rings and thrust washer issues leading to lack of oil and the dreaded crankwalk ....

However many people have managed with years with a 4 engine and no issues. Regular checks at service time and you could see no trouble at all.

Tuneing to 350bhp and 1.3bar boost is an acceptable limit regarding the 4 engine. However some have been known to hold more boost with little to no issues (just ask micevo@1.7bar)

yeah what rob said! Or buy a 4 with a later engine! Don't think there much more money. main thing is service history mate like most car's if there looked after they fine.and have a good look under it! Plus these car's are lighter than the newer one's so not as much power is needed to keep up

Oi you leave the 4 alone! Lol if your worryed get one with a later engine. Load's of 4's don't get it, some do! Plus these are 13 year's old now and i bet aint had it easy! Lol and you show me a bottom end won't go. Nothing last's for ever! I've hear of evo 10's with big end's going already

iv been on the look out and iv come to think the evo 6 is best price best power etc

yea i ran a 4 engine up to 1.7 bar with no issues at all i would NOT recomend this as we were trin to blow it up:disgusted:,
when engine was taken out an stripped down there was nothing wrong with it, in fact we sold it to some guy who was putting it in another car,( very cheaply of corse) as said would run up to 1.2/3 bar you can get a good 320/330 bhp ish, just do usual things like 255 fuel pump and boost controler (manual)
crankwalk... dont worry about it just use a good oil, DONT start engine up with clutch down dont put a heavy clutch init, if you want a better one for more agressive starts then get an E7,8,9 one, brakes... just put decent fluid in and goodridge hoses all round do the trick,
these are very good cars and very cheap for what you get, if you want more then get later engine forge it, brembos big **** off turbo and there you go, still proberly cheaper than the over priced over rated evo 5 or 6s, which of corse dont have any issues with them do they lol!!!!!!
ive had an E3 E4 an E6 and i much prefer my 4.....

I totally agree!!
Evo 4's are powerful if tweeked correctly.. Im running my Evo and im hoping its around 380-400 bhp, it certainly feels like it at the mo :wink:
