What's this noise help???

Got cambelt service and lash adjusters changed yesterday. Problem is there's vibrating type of noise coming through the dashboard very faint possibly a grinding type of noise, only sometimes but when it occurs it's seems like the dashboard is vibrating very faintly, you got to listen out for it. It's hard to hear but I know it wasnt happening before I got the work done. I know the exhaust moves now and then but this noise occurs when the exhaust doesn't move so I'm left wondering why could this be happening? If anyone has experienced anything similar or you know why this could be happening please let me know as I'm getting really worried now, cause this wasnt happening before I got the cambelt and lash adjusters changed.

It could be your balance shaft belt out by a notch or so. I had the same prob. and it was vibrating very badly. It was the balance shaft belt timing.

Ok so how do I sort that out is it hard to fix

I agree the balance shalt must be out of alinement.
It's prettly much means re doing the cam belt again but doing it right this time.

Ok so basically I Gota take it back to the garage who done it and tell them to do it again I did ask them a bit ago on the phone and they said they checked it and it was fine all the belts but the noise was not there before and now it is.

No there is no easy way to check without removing the covers. Trouble is with so many different size pullys in there it's to easy for 1 of them to be 1 revolution out. For example the crank I think does 2 revolutions to 1 revolution of the cams but the balance shaft does I think 3 revolutions to 1 rev of the cams. They must be 1 rev out on one of the pulleys

So how do I get the garage to do it again then I mean it sounds complicated how do I convince them there might be a problem with one of the pulleys???

defo sounds like the balance belts and as said the only way is to remove the covers and look at the timing marks to see if they still line up, if you want to check yourself then you have to take off the lower crank belt pulley, water pump pulley, and aux idle pulley, then the 8-10 bolts for the plastic cover and then you'll be able to see the marks, but if it needs adjusting you'll have to put it all back together then take it back, so i'd say take it back anyway

i'm sure you can say it wasn't there when the car was brought in and now it is, therefore in must be related to something you've done, was it a proper mitsi garage?

Just basically tell them what you think it is based on what B6Lee has put. That's the best explaination and that you believe that is what is causing the noise and ask them to re-check the timing.

Since you had the cam belt done with them they should honour the inspection.

Also go out with them in the car and identify the noise.

There's not alot else advice to give!

same happened to me took it back and wrong again. Took it to a pro in the end witch i was going to anyway but thought it save me 50 in fuel. Ended up paying for the job twice! What i learned for this is Alway's take the evo to a pro! Even if they say ' yeah worked on these before and all that crap! Take it to a pro and your never have any worries like this!

How bad was your guys mine is faint but just at the garage and there looking at it now I get a really slight vibration through dash but not nothing what is too obvious could it be auxiliary belt by any chance do let us know how loud or faint yours was so o could compare it with what I'm being told so i know thanks guys.

ask them if they are aware that the balance belt pulley can be 360degs out, so although the marks look correct it could be out by 360degs.

it can be checked by lining up the marks and putting a screwdriver through a hole in the block to see if its in the correct position.

Mine would rattle the sunroof in the car it was out that badly!

+1 that's want happened when i went back the 2nd time. Even tho i told him it set's every 3 turn's. He just lined every thing up like a normal car!

Mate Went back to the garage they said it was the auxiliary belt tensioner seemed ok after he cleaned it out made the noise a couple of times test driving the car but kind of stopped. He said the ayxillary belt tensioner was the fault as we put a new belt on there it a bit tight and the tensioner got rust and dirt in there so he cleaned it out greesed it up. Anyways driving home and now when I turn right got a grinding noise as well.
