Hi Peps,

As I have now run my re con engine and gearbox in - I gave my car a blast last night :D

Now its fine changing gear from 1st to 2nd to 3rd to 4th, however when changing gear at high revs or changing gear quick it grinds a bit. :(

Any ideas what this may be – Shorely it can't be to do with the gearbox and I have a new clutch.

Cheers

Grinds into what gear at high revs and what is the biting point like on the clutch ?

Just had a re con gear box with new oil - The clutch was brand new 1000 miles ago, if that, so biting point is good - It only grinds a bit when i change gear flat out from 4th to 5th, going up, newer down.

Cheers

It could be that the slave needs looking at or the pedal needs adjusting. I have a sneaky suspicion that the box is not up to scratch as both of my former suggestions would result in a crunching of all gears.

It is with that in mind that I have arrived now at the conclusion; Synchromesh!

I would have words with the supplier first thing in the morning buddy.

Oh god, don't say that El - I'm still struggling to get my invoice changed to say I had am Evo 6 lump put in - The guy keeps saying, its in the post or its on its way. Oh well. Another email is on its way, also re this gear change. I'm being patient with the guy however if I have been screwed over - I will take them to the cleaners - Will keep you updated.

Cheers,

I think you might be better of getting the car on a ramp and checking the engine number too. It is starting to look a little pear shaped right about now.

wont be synchros if the box is recon as they wouldve changed these (unless you've been diddled)

unfortunatly if it is synchros then the parts are cheap BUT expensive/time consuming fitting them as the box will need to be split.

i beg to differ about the syncromesh, i have just had my box rebuilt last week and a new excedy fast road clutch and fly wheel put in which i purchased from Jamie@evotune, top marks fella! parts are great.

but im still getting the same problem as what lead me to put it in for repair in the first place, thinking the syncromesh had gone. im still getting rough selection in 2nd and 3rd. my only thort now is that the gear selector folk needs replacing or as El said, somethings a miss with slave cylinder?

In a nut shell Ollie,
it means is that there is no way that the gear box fitted in your car is a reconditioned unit.

Get in touch with the guy and make him arrange for it's collection.

Better yet, book it in with him and go there yourself to see that the box is replaced.

Repairing the unit is not worth doing as it will cost almost the same as getting another gear box.

The slave should always be the first point of call, but in this case, the issue is with the 5th gear only and that is in the higher rev range.

If money has been paid out for components that are supplied and fitted under warranty then they should be rectified by said warranty.

The most common prognosis, albeit for a motor vehicle, has been put forward.

I honestly can't say it is the slave for the above reason.

Ollie, get the engine number checked asap and please get in touch with this guy to save yourself some headache.

Just cause it is a recon box does not mean it will have all new synchros in it would be uneconomical to replace all of them when doing a box same as the bearings not all of them are replaced seen as some are £90 each + vat they will only replace what looks or feels worn

The op is getting a grinding when changing gear and has all the hall marks of worn synchros

Does yours grind into gear or is just tight ?

It is a case of touch and go on the box builds, I personally would go for another box and have the one with the issues reconditioned by a pro that offers warranty and then put it up for sale right away to cover the cost of the whole issue.

It would sell a lot quicker with a warranty behind it and would fetch a little more money too which would help out in the end of course.

That would be if there was a problem with only a single gear change, sometimes it is a sign that the rest are also on their way out too but in rare cases.

What has your guy told you regarding the issue SnowMold???
