what next?

my 5 has been knocking when turning left. only at slow speeds and only when turning left.

changed the cv joint as this had a bit of play.... didnt work as there was still about 6mm of play. so changed the driveshaft as after removal, had been poorly re-conditioned before.... no play in this at all. but it didnt work :cry:

does anyone else have any ideas? also checked the diff bolts and this isnt the problem.

cheers for the link buddy..... i suggested this to the guy and he wasn't sure it would be but would have another look tomorrow.... this is turning into a rather expensive fix for a potentially small problem!!

the good news is, he is a local guy and has always give me a good price. and he isnt charging me for the labour so far and the also for the cv joint so there is some good news!!!

when it happened to me it was a very bad klunking sound when on full lock and the whole car was shaking

its nowhere near that bad yet. lol. its only when going slow and only when turning left. it sounds like its right out on the left, but i can feel it through the pedals.... i gonna have a look at the transfer box today hopefully.... just getting the time to do it.. :hm: and its my bloody daily driver!!! im having to use my missus ford ka :ninja: :shock:

Well if you have done the cv joint then I don't see what else it can be.

Took me a slow and steady 2 hrs to remove transfer box on my back.

Don't forget to drain the gearbox and transfer oils before removing the output shafts. You'll need a slide hammer to get the output shafts out

Also, get a friend to help you when dropping the transfer box and putting it back in, it's a heavy bugger and will really need to be dropped down and lifted back up on a jack.

As above, use a slide hammer to get the output shafts off, to split the box you only need the passenger side one out, but it can be difficult to get to, so what I did was remove the drivers side one with a slide hammer, then put a long ratchet extention through the hole left by the output shaft and knocked the passenger side one out that way, once it's off the box will need a little convincing to come off, but should come off quite easily.

The prop shaft just slides into the end of the transfer box, so once the transfer box is free from the gearbox just pull it away and the prop will just fall out the end.

Have you tried changing the drop links? They can cause knocking.

Also the topmounts can be a cause. Sometimes a bit of grease in the topmount can help.

What an expensive route I took to fix it (drop links, cv joint, coilovers) :cry: Turned out the N/S/F drive shaft was replaced for one from a later model, they are slightly longer so had been knocking when turning, got one from a 5, problem solved. Typical, spent the best part of £1500 to sort a problem that should have been £120 at most :disgusted:

tell me about it!!! lol. i have done cv joint and n/s/f driveshaft.... nothing. its just getting the time to look atm.

Well, I think I have some drop links kicking about somewhere. They should be good as they weren't the cause of my problem. Try the grease in the topmount, if that doesn't work, give me a shout and I can get these posted out to you if you want? (If I can find them lol)

i think we found the problem today!!.... the knocking had got worse and after getting it on the ramps it was easier to find the fault.... the brake disc is slightly warped and at slow speeds you can see the caliper moving a bit. i had already ordered some new discs so i wont be out of pocket for it!!!

after taking a long drive to lakeside shopping centre and back 2 days ago, i got to within 1 mile from my house and slowed right down to turn into the last road..... and the knocking started again. and also the brakes squealing as i am about to stop dead. so i have ordered new pf.11 pads and braided lines from ant as the pads on there when i got it were mintex and not very good.
hopefully when i get spare time next month i will taking the car to marty on here as he isnt too far away and willing to try and solve the knocking riddle as the guy down the road is clutching at straws and its getting expensive!!

just when you think you can spend spare money on performance modding...... :ninja:
