Guys i have an evo 5 and ive just had an evo 8 fq340 crank re-ground and re-nitrited (sorry for spelling) under advisory, Now im looking to see what bearings to use, i need first over sized bearings mains and big ends. Have 3 different kinds listed at the engineers that done my car and not sure what ones to get so any advice will be very helpfull. I want to get this right so any advice would be a big help, my car was re-built then broke within 2 days and ruined my crank and bearings along with it, lucky enough my pistons were fine, wasnt looking forward to re-boring again or replacing pistons again either. I have standard rods fitted on my car just incase this makes a difference to what ones to use. Thanks for any help guys

I just ordered some bearings main and acl from indigo and put into mine when I rebuilt it not a clue what size though. Give ant a call and he will reccomend some, although my crank was just polished and not ground

Use genuine bearings they have a much higher tolerance and are proven on HUGH hp builds.

If the people who machined the crank don't know what bearings to use I would be wary about there work and reground Evo cranks don't work very well.

Guys thanks for all the input, the 8 crank I bought has been reground by .75 on the journals and .5 on the mains not too happy that it's had so much taken off it, it has been reniterited but again not sure how this will last in my car, it cost me 110 for the crank and it wasn't right so had to regrind it 85 for the regrind and 70 for the niterite to get done. How much will it cost me to get a new crank for my 5 cos I'm sick of the hidden crap that engineers don't tell you and mechanics don't tell you either. Or has anyone got a good crank for sale with proof of measurements? Been bumped with the last one and don't want that again

christ thats pricey! i have a couple of good cranks available for 150.

i NEVER regrind an evo crank, not worth the hassle or worry of it going wrong.

im sick of spending money on this car to be honest, i want it fixed and sold asap doing my head in, been nothing but problems with it since i bought it and its bareley even been on the road since i bought it only done about 1500 miles since i bought it. I need a crank that has been checked for trueness and is fully able to go in my car right away, cant be any problems with it at all cos i cant deal with it any more.
Rich can you tell me the cranks are in good condition and dont need ground and have been checked all the way from mains to journals and are all the correct size? i need to be 1000% sure its perfect before i buy another one.... this is the 2nd crank ive had already, i was told to regrind mine and fit oversize bearings then now ive done it folk say dont do it... all getting too much for me now, i was told it was safe to regrind and use, even the regrinding services offered on ebay say its fine to use but are they just saying that or what????? CONFUSED.COM!!!!!!!

Unless the crank has been damaged eg oil pressure lost etc it shouldn't require grinding speak too matt at mg autos Ripley he may even have a crank but he is a wealth of engine building knowlage.

theres some dodgy ones on ebay, i always been told scrap the crank on a evo never grind

Same as that. I had mine lightly polished but that's all. Removing metal from summat like the crank isn't a gd idea

can i ask why is it bad to regrind an evo crank? does it weaken it to much or just throw things out of sink...
would rather rich or jamie answer as they have vast knowledge an not just hear say...
reason being i have a crank which may need a regrind.
cheers

I don't know why it's bad to re-grind, I've spoken to 4 different engineers and all have said pretty much same thing, Evo cranks can be ground up to 1mm ACL do bearings to fit upto and including 1mm over size, I was also told that Evo cranks don't come standard with nitrite so no reason to do this either as it doesn't help much and is too expensive, plus no one in the right mind would grind the crank if it was advised against by manufacturers and I've checked and Mitsubishi do oversize bearings as well. Fact is everyone has an oppinion and some are the same some are different and I guess it's just your own preference as to what you listen too or decide to do. A race car specialist and chief engineer over 30 years experience said if you get a good grind done with a good set of bearings then the car will be just as good as having a new crank, evos are bad for cranks going any way as we all know so what's to blame if it ain't been re-ground? Nothing to say it won't happen again with a new crank or a re-ground one. Mine has been ground, re-balanced and is 100% and is going back in my car with a set of ACL black race spec bearings.

Yes they are Nitrided whoever told you they were not is clearly not working with these cars day in day out.

Why don't you just buy a good used crank and be done with it, I just don't understand why people try to cut corners when building engine's, it will bite you in the arse in the longrun.

Just use the one you have then if you are so confident in it, personally I would use it as a paper weight
